Reverse the Curse

Anyone else see the Midol commercial that ends with the phrase, “Reverse the Curse”?

Ah yes, just what women need: another reason to think they are being punished for being a female. Calling menstruation a curse is so Biblical times, we should be over calling it that by now. It’s just another way to put women down and make them think that they are being punished in some way, when really, having your period is part of the cycle that allows you to give birth, which is most important to any civilization.

Look, no one said that time of the month is fun- but a curse? It’s a bodily function. Sure, it’s great that women who have really bad symptoms have medications like Midol available to them so that they don’t have to spend the week in bed, but you don’t have to make them feel bad about being a woman. The commercial is supposed to be empowering, but how is telling women that they have a curse on them ever supposed to be empowering?

Hi,

I couldn't agree more. We have been discussing this in a group I started about honoring women:

I'm disgusted with Midol. They have yet to produce a commercial that has any respect for women and our cycles. Every commercial they make is misogynist and abusive. They could simply market their product for symptoms, but that would be too easy. Instead they want to push women to feel ashamed as if they need their pill to cure them. I've written to Midol 3 times, but receive the same response and the commercial is still on!

Hi,

I posted before about the Midol commercial. I can't remember when I've seen such a distasteful ad. I wrote to Midol 3 times, but with generic responses, but I've since learned that you have to CALL THEM in order to get action. The phone number to their consumer care division is 800-331-4536. Please call to give your thoughts on this ad. If you don't leave your last name and zip at least, it is as if you never called! I just found this out after calling AGAIN yesterday. I spoke with someone who said that letters and e-mails aren't really helpful, and that phone calls are the best approach. I have a feeling that more women are offended by this ad than we see, but it's just that Bayer is such a huge conglomerate and it is hard to get through to make the point. So call them and in the meantime, boycott Bayer products!!!
